The Prometheus Aged 28 Years Distilled 1988 'Smoky Speyside' is a remarkable whisky with a complex and rich profile. Here are some tasting notes:
Aroma: Autumn leaves and wood glue at the start, dominated by patisserie aromas like Belgian buns, cooked raisins, apple turnovers, and Eccles cakes. There are also hints of old bookcase, prunes, chocolate, fruitcake, burnt raisins, dark gingerbread, pine resin, latex, desiccated coconut, and apple syrup. A faint suggestion of a faraway bonfire adds to the complexity.
Flavor: Full-bodied with a warm, spicy mouthfeel. Savory oak, muscovado sugar, apple fruit leather, dark gingerbread, rich fruitcake, stewed orange, and nutty, biscuity notes. There are also faint hints of wood glue, latex, rye bread, treacle tart, and cinnamon biscuits. The integration is excellent, with the oak providing a powerful, balanced presence.
Texture: Silky and round, with a rich mouthfeel.
Finish: Long and warm, with lingering notes of walnut cake, clove rock, cooked raisins, and dry oak spices. The finish is warm without being too hot, with a faint sootiness.
This whisky is a serious, brooding, and intense dram, ideal for late-night fireside contemplation. The smoky notes are subtle, adding to the overall complexity and depth of the whisky.
