Established in 1849, Pol Roger is one of the few remaining Grande Marque champagne houses that are entirely family owned and operated. Its prestige cuvée, Winston Churchill, is admired worldwide, but I love to talk about the white-label Reserve Brut. Generations of knowledge are the secret weapon behind this cuvée that consistently presents as an elegant, almost ethereal bubble, exhibiting the style of much more expensive Blanc de Blancs. It is a blend of equal parts pinot noir, pinot meunier, and chardonnay from 30 crus. The 25 percent reserve wine used annually helps maintain the House style. The pinot noir brings structure, body and power; the pinot meunier is all about freshness, roundness and fruitiness; while the chardonnay sets up its aromatic complexity, finesse, elegance, and lightness on the palate. So when you need Champagne to cover the bases, this is it. It spends 48 months in the cellar creating a kaleidoscope of honeysuckle, jasmine, brioche quince and tangerine. You can’t go wrong with this label.
The Pol Roger Brut Reserve is described as having a light greenish-yellow color with silver reflections and lively mousse. It has a powerful and attractive nose, delivering aromas of fruit like pear and mango, followed by light flavors of honeysuckle and white jasmine, with lingering notes of vanilla and brioche. The palate is described as full-bodied, with ripe, discreet sweet fruit giving volume and a pleasant acidity on the finish.
