The Jack Daniel’s Green Label, also known as Old No. 7 Green Label, has an intriguing history. Contrary to popular belief, it wasn’t originally sold with a green label at a lower age. The touching story that Lem Motlow launched the black label after Jack Daniel’s death in 1911 as a mark of respect is not accurate. In reality, when Lem Motlow resumed distilling after Prohibition, he couldn’t wait for the whiskey to age for 4 years. Instead, he introduced a one-year-old version with a green label to distinguish it from the original Black Label. Today, the Green Label is aged a similar period to its ubiquitous black sibling, but there’s a subtle difference. The casks used for Green Label are drawn exclusively from ground-floor rack houses, where temperature variation is less pronounced, resulting in a milder aging effect. While Black Label was once bottled at 45% alc./vol., Green Label was bottled at a lower strength, later adjusted to 40% alc./vol. Now both labels share the same alcohol strength, but Green Label remains a ‘value bottling’ of Jack Daniel’s, available in only about half of the U.S. states. Overseas enthusiasts who pay a premium for Green Label due to its perceived rarity might want to reconsider their choice1.
Tasting Notes for Jack Daniel’s Green Label:
Appearance: Golden amber with green tinges.
Aroma: Buttered corn and nutty, smoky notes (think roast chestnuts) with faint hints of wax and shoe polish.
Taste: Starts hot with chargrilled buttered corn, evolving into spicier notes of sandalwood and cinnamon.
Aftertaste: Dry finish with peppery spice and red bell pepper notes.
In summary, Jack Daniel’s Green Label offers a unique experience distinct from its more famous counterpart, Gentleman Jack. While it may not be everyone’s favorite, its smooth and rich flavor profile, balanced sweetness, and oakiness make it a worthwhile choice for those seeking something different
