When assessing a vodka, it’s essential to follow a systematic approach to fully appreciate its qualities. Let’s break down the tasting process:

Appearance:

Hold a small pour of the 1970s Saraton Vodka up to the light or against a white background.

Observe its clarity. Is it crystal clear and bright, or does it exhibit slight cloudiness?

Look for any deposits resulting from precipitation.

Swirl the glass gently and observe the “legs” or “tears” that form on the inside of the glass. Are they thin or fat? Close together or forming large curves? Thick, heavy legs that fall quickly may indicate added sugar.

Nose (Aroma):

The aroma of a spirit can reveal a lot about the sample.

Bring the glass slowly towards your nose, concentrating on detecting and remembering the initial aroma.

Avoid putting your nose directly into the glass; gradually smell more. The first whiff often provides valuable insights.

Some people prefer to nose with their mouth slightly open, while others keep it closed. Choose what works best for you and remain consistent.

Swirling the glass (as done in wine tasting) is not recommended for spirits, as it tends to release ethanol notes rather than the finer nuances of the vodka.

If the vodka has a cork closure, beware of possible cork taint, characterized by a musty smell caused by 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (TCA) transferred from the cork to the vodka.

Taste:

Take a small sip and let it coat your palate.

Pay attention to the mouthfeel, flavor, and any lingering aftertaste.

Note whether it’s smooth, harsh, or somewhere in between.

Consider the balance of flavors—sweetness, bitterness, and any other discernible notes.

Overall Impression:

Based on the appearance, aroma, and taste, form an overall judgment.

Keep notes on the flavors, aromas, and other characteristics you notice. This will help you remember your preferences for future reference.

Remember that tasting vodka is a subjective experience, and everyone’s palate is different. Enjoy exploring the unique qualities of the 1970s Saraton Vodka!
