1950s The Antiquary ‘De Luxe Old Scotch Whisky’ 26 ⅔ Fl oz
Colour: Gold.
Nose: Superb indeed, wonderfully honeyed and mentholy. Chestnut honey, some toasted brioche, a whiff of fir smoke, pumpkin cake, a large bag of sultanas, a wee glass of proper old PX, a touch of absinth… Rich and Complex: Expect a deep, layered aroma with notes of dried fruit (like sultanas, raisins, and figs) mingled with hints of honey and dark caramel. The cask aging would
have imparted rich wood notes, perhaps leather, tobacco, and a subtle smokiness. Hints of cloves, nutmeg, and perhaps a trace of cinnamon could add complexity.
Mouth: Incredible arrival, still very punchy and vibrant, smoky (imagine!), with perfect resinous notes, many honeys, some tobacco, then an avalanche of dried fruits (figs as always, bananas, currants) and a discreet minerality that’s just underlining the whole package. Perfect old whisky, really perfect. A rich, mouth-coating texture that feels smooth and velvety on the tongue. Deep maltiness with a balanced sweetness, often with flavors of dried fruits, toffee, and a touch of chocolate. A harmonious presence of oak, contributing to flavors of vanilla, tobacco, and subtle earthy notes, accompanied by a slightly peppery spice.
Finish: Long, mainly honeyed, with notes of fresh mint leaves and pine needles A mellow smokiness or a faint echo of oak and dark chocolate may persist.
This would be a whisky that evokes a sense of history and craftsmanship from a bygone era, likely very complex and delicate compared to modern counterparts.
